Body Composition Scan: What to Expect and Why It's More Than Just a Number
Aug 13, 2025
A body composition scan offers a deeper look into your metabolic health than any scale ever could – because when it comes to your health, weight is just one piece of the puzzle. Whether you're starting a fitness plan, fine-tuning your nutrition or optimising your hormones, a body composition scan provides objective information about what's happening inside your body, helping you focus on the changes that matter most for your long-term health and wellbeing.
Body Composition Scan: What to Expect and Why It's More Than Just a Number
Unlike a regular scale, a body composition scan shows you what makes up your body weight. It breaks it down into:
- Body fat mass
- Skeletal muscle mass
- Water balance
- Visceral fat (the type of fat stored around your organs)
- Basal metabolic rate (how many calories your body burns at rest)
What to Expect During Your Body Composition Scan
You'll remove your shoes and socks.
You'll step onto the machine and hold the hand electrodes.
The scan takes around 30 to 60 seconds.
It's completely non-invasive and only requires a few seconds of standing still.
For the most accurate results, we recommend having your scan in a fasted state or a few hours after eating, and making sure you're well hydrated.

Why a Body Composition Scan Is So Insightful for Metabolic Health
It Moves Beyond the Scale
You could gain 2.5 kilograms of muscle and lose 2.5 kilograms of fat, and the number on the scale might not change. But a body composition scan can show meaningful improvements in your body composition and metabolic health that the scale alone can't measure.
It helps tailor your plan
Are you eating enough to support your muscle mass? Not recovering well from exercise? Could inflammation or metabolic health be influencing your progress? A body composition scan gives us valuable insights that help guide nutrition, exercise and, where appropriate, hormone therapy.
It tracks visceral fat.
Excess visceral fat is associated with insulin resistance, heart disease and inflammation. Reducing it can be an important sign of improving metabolic health, even if your weight stays the same.
It shows how well you're aging.
Muscle mass is an important marker of healthy ageing. We use your body composition scans to assess the risk of muscle loss, guide strength-based exercise and nutrition strategies, and support your long-term health and physical function.
It builds motivation
Seeing meaningful improvements in your muscle-to-fat ratio, water balance and metabolic rate can help you stay motivated, even if your weight plateaus.
A Foundation for Personalised Wellness
Whether you're starting GLP-1 therapy and want to preserve muscle, healing from burnout and looking to rebuild metabolic strength, managing autoimmunity and monitoring inflammation and fluid retention, or simply trying to feel more confident in your body, a body scan that gives us data that empowers better decisions, not just for a reason, but for the long term.
Ready to See What You're Made Of?
We recommend repeating your body composition scan every four to eight weeks as part of your personalised care plan. Tracking these changes over time gives us a clearer picture of your progress and helps us tailor your nutrition, exercise and treatment strategies to better support your long-term metabolic health.
